Celebrate with fireworks at home on New Year’s Eve

By Announcement, Events

As the year comes to an end, it’s time to gear up for 2024 and all that it has in store! If you’re planning to celebrate the occasion at your home in Mississauga, you’ll be happy to know that you’re allowed to set off fireworks on your private property from dusk on Sunday, December 31, 2023 until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day – Monday, January 1, 2024.

To use fireworks on a public street or a City park, residents must obtain a permit from the City.

To dispose of used or unused fireworks, completely submerge the fireworks in water and soak them overnight. Wrap the soaked fireworks in a plastic bag to keep them from drying out, and dispose of them in your garbage bin.

Additional important reminders

The winter holidays are an extremely busy time of year for most residents. Be kind to your neighbours and remember to put safety first, no matter where you celebrate. Make the most of your celebrations by being prepared and planning your events with safety in mind.

Mississauga residents can make a complaint for illegal use of fireworks on private property or City parks by calling 311 or submitting a complaint online at mississauga.ca/fireworks. To report fireworks on public roadways, residents should contact Peel Regional Police using the non-emergency number: 905-453-3311.

You can also celebrate the New Year by joining other Mississauga residents at Mississauga’s Celebration Square for entertainment and fireworks on December 31st!

Enjoy and be safe.

To learn more or apply for a permit, go to mississauga.ca/fireworks. For additional questions, call 311 or review the City’s fireworks by-law.

Background

The City of Mississauga has a Fireworks By-law to regulate the setting off of fireworks within Mississauga. The City’s Fireworks By-law was updated on December 1, 2023 to allow fireworks until 11 p.m. on designated holidays except for New Year’s Eve, when fireworks are allowed until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

The designated holidays when fireworks are permitted until 11 p.m. include Victoria Day, Canada Day, Lunar New Year and Diwali. Mississauga residents can use fireworks on these five designated holidays at home on their private property without needing to obtain a permit from the City. As of December 1, 2023, the maximum fine for the illegal use of fireworks increased to $100,000.

Mississauga selected to host Ontario’s top country music awards in 2024 and 2026

By Announcement, Events

The City of Mississauga is thrilled to share that the Country Music Association of Ontario (CMAO) has selected Mississauga to be the host city for the CMAOntario Festival and Awards in 2024 and 2026.

“Mississauga is honoured and excited to welcome the 12th annual CMAOntario Festival and Awards,” said Acting Mayor and Ward 3 Councillor Chris Fonseca. “As Canada’s seventh-largest city and 2023 Music City of the Year, we are home to world-class, diverse musicians and a vibrant live music scene that attracts visitors from across Canada. I want to thank CMAO for choosing Mississauga to hold this prestigious music festival. We look forward to celebrating Ontario’s artists and welcoming them to our city next summer.”

CMAO has partnered with Visit Mississauga and the City of Mississauga to bring a weekend of live music, concerts and activities to the city from May 31 to June 2, 2024, with a spectacular awards show planned for Sunday, June 2 at the Living Arts Centre.

“Hosting these prestigious awards in our city truly highlights that we have great spaces to share and enjoy music while advancing our Music Strategy,” said Jodi Robillos, Commissioner, Community Services. “As a City, we’re focused on amplifying Mississauga’s music scene and helping advance local artists and talent. I want to acknowledge Victoria Clarke and the Visit Mississauga team for their sponsorship role and for working to bring this fantastic event to our city, and thank CMAO for selecting Mississauga to host this event first in 2024 and then again in 2026.”

Earlier this year, Mississauga was named the 2023 Music City of the Year and was recognized for its efforts in establishing a Music Strategy with a goal of positioning the city as an incubator for top musical talent and national destination for live music events and festivals.

In 2022, the City announced its first Music Strategy: 2022-2026, which identifies 32 actions over the next five years to support the growth and development of Mississauga’s music industry. It focuses on four guiding principles, which include amplifying Mississauga’s artists, creating a favourable environment for live music, supporting underrepresented people and groups, and celebrating Mississauga’s history and success.

City holds public meeting on increasing housing choices in neighbourhoods

By Events, Planning & Development

Mississauga needs more housing options for families, older adults, students and others who want to live in low-rise neighbourhoods. Increasing the supply and variety of homes across Mississauga through gentle density is a primary action in the City’s Housing Action Plan.

The City is holding a statutory public meeting at Planning and Development Committee to present draft regulations to allow residents to build up to four residential units on low-rise residential lots.

Meeting Details

When:  Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at 6 p.m.

Where:  Council Chambers, City Hall

Participate:  Watch the live stream on the City’s website (without registering) or join in person at City Hall. Instructions on how to register for the meeting are included in the meeting agenda.

Note: The housing information session planned for December 6 has been postponed until 2024.

Background

Mississauga City Council has long supported exploring policies to introduce gentle density and build more housing.

  • The City’s Increasing Housing Choices in Neighbourhoods (IHCN) work, which began in 2021, established new zoning and Official Plan regulations for additional residential units such as garden suites, garage conversions and laneway suites and allows up to three residential units on a lot.
  • IHCN stemmed from Mississauga’s 2017 Making Room for the Middle affordable housing strategy. At the time, the City was one of the first municipalities in Canada to develop a housing strategy focused on middle-income earners.

Read Growing Mississauga: An Action Plan for New Housing to learn more about the City’s efforts to help get more homes built, streamline building approvals and make homes more affordable.
