Community Rides are free, guided bike rides that take place across various neighbourhoods in Mississauga.

We often see our city through the windshield of a car and miss so much in the process. So, why not discover Mississauga on two wheels, make new friends and strengthen your ties with the community by joining the City’s Community Rides as part of Mississauga’s 50th anniversary? The guided bike rides are free and are a wonderful way to discover Mississauga’s neighbourhoods while staying active. All you need is a bike and a helmet! So, come on out and join in the fun!

Starting Saturday, May 4, Community Rides will be taking place every two weeks until the end of October. Rides are for all ages and cycling ability levels, and happen in different Mississauga neighbourhoods. They are between eight and 16 kilometres. If you can’t make it to one of the rides, you can still cycle the routes at your convenience using our online route map.

What:

Community Rides are free, guided bike rides that take place across Mississauga. These bike rides are an excellent way to experience the city’s cycling infrastructure. From on-road bike lanes to shared pathways and multi-use trails, there’s always something new to discover.

Who:

Mississauga residents of all ages and cycling abilities who want to be active outdoors and are interested in seeing their neighbourhood and city by bike.

Where/when:

Community Rides will take place every two weeks between June and October.

Those interested in participating in the group-style rides must register and be at the starting location for the start time. City staff will be onsite at the starting location to help guide participants and answer any questions.

Mississauga 50 for 50

As part of Mississauga’s 50th anniversary, we are encouraging residents to give back to the community by participating in the 50 for 50 challenge. You can do your part by showing your appreciation for the benefits of cycling – whether you bike 50 kilometres or bike for 50 minutes to help reduce your carbon emissions or simply stay active. Once you complete the challenge, download your 50 for 50 certificate to show off your civic pride.

As we approach Road Safety Week from May 14-20, 2024, we would like to provide you with an update on Peel Regional Police’s recent efforts to address road safety in Peel Region.

Since the start of this year, there have been multiple collisions across Peel Region resulting in 11 fatalities. This is the highest number of road fatalities we have seen in a 4-month period since 2020. Of the 11 deceased, 8 of them were males between the ages of 19-29 years old. Our data shows that road safety implications have disproportionately higher rates among young males. We are urging everyone, especially young male drivers, to avoid speeding, driving aggressively, driving distracted, or driving impaired.

Peel Regional Police is working diligently to prevent the loss of life on our roads. We have posted a Public Safety Notice on this matter and encourage you to share this message with your communities to amplify our notice for residents to practise safe driving.

Additionally, we would like to bring to your attention recent efforts from the Safer Roads Team (SRT) in arresting a prolific driving offender subject to 5 lifetime driving prohibitions. On Thursday, April 11, 2024, SRT officers arrested 41-year-old Nirmal Singh from Brampton. Since 2017, Nirmal Singh has been convicted of 35 Criminal Code and 8 Provincial Offence Act (POA) charges. Road safety is a crucial policing function, and one which all members of Peel Regional Police are committed to addressing. With warmer weather approaching, we will continue our efforts to curb illegal street racing and aggressive high-speed driving in Brampton and Mississauga. In the coming weeks, we will be launching our annual Project E.R.A.S.E. (Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere) and Project Noisemaker initiatives aimed at changing poor and aggressive driver behaviour. More details on the launch of these initiatives will be shared in the future.

Battleford Community Recycling Centre

Regular Hours: Monday – Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Additional Operating Hours:

• Summer: Monday – Thursday, 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., May to August
• Fall: Monday – Tuesday, 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., September to October

Hours of operation remain unchanged at the Fewster, Caledon and Bolton CRCs.

Residents can check the waste sorter to find out if a specific item is accepted at a CRC and how to prepare items for safe disposal. For information about the services available at each CRC location, check peelregion.ca/waste/community-recycling-centres.

 

Virtual Share, Reuse, Repair Hub expands to a new community and grows its resource and business directory

Circular Innovation Council, a national not-for-profit organization focused on accelerating Canada’s transition toward a circular economy, has expanded its virtual community hub in partnership with Peel Region.

Initially launched by Circular Innovation Council in 2022 with support from York Region’s Circular Economy Initiatives Fund, the Share, Reuse, Repair Hub is a community-based virtual resource that provides easy access to share, reuse, repair services in the community. It also offers a platform for local businesses to promote their contribution to the circular economy.

The Hub includes:

• A directory of 85+ businesses, resources, and events specific to Peel Region and the municipalities of Brampton, Caledon, and Mississauga.
• A new map that allows users to find businesses based on location and categories.
• Educational information about how different businesses support the circular economy.
• Listing of local events like repair cafes, swaps, curbside giveaways, and collection drives.
• 30+ informative virtual resources.
• Promotional opportunities for local businesses to showcase their sustainable efforts to the local community.

Businesses and organizations that are not currently listed in the directory and want to get involved are encouraged to reach out to Circular Innovation Council by emailing info@ShareReuseRepairHub.ca or submit a request form to be added to the Hub.
