Heavy rains release partially treated wastewater into Lake Ontario

By Announcement, Resources, Ward 1

BRAMPTON, ON (July 16, 2024) – Due to recent heavy rains and subsequent flooding, an overflow of partially treated wastewater from the G. E. Booth wastewater treatment facility has been released into Lake Ontario. The exact amount of water is unknown at this time. Partial bypasses are common during high rainfall events.

The drinking water supply remains clean and safe for consumption. Our water treatment facilities are operating effectively, ensuring the highest standards of water quality.

Heavy rains can flush pollutants into water bodies. Residents are advised to refrain from swimming or engaging in any water-related activities along the Lake Ontario beaches in Mississauga until further notice. Please check the beach water testing site for the most recent results.

Peel Region is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available. We encourage residents to stay informed through our official communication channels.

UPDATE Metrolinx Notice – Construction Impacts

By Announcement, Hurontario LRT, Ward 1
Metrolinx Notice: Upcoming Construction Impacts

As construction on the Hazel McCallion Line progresses, crews will be welding tracks and doing concrete work for guideway installation within the intersection of Hurontario Street and Mineola Road. This work is scheduled to begin Thursday July 25th, 2024, at 10pm, until Wednesday August 28, 2024, at 10pm.

During this work, east-west traffic will be prohibited at Mineola Road, across Hurontario Street in each direction. Left turns will also not be permitted in the intersection.

Detours for eastbound traffic along Mineola Road are available via Woodland Avenue, Inglewood Drive, Oriole Avenue, and Eaglewood Boulevard at the new signalized intersection to cross Hurontario Street. Detours for westbound traffic along Mineola Road are available via Broadmoor Avenue, Windy Oaks, Crossfield Bend, and Eaglewood Boulevard at the new signalized intersection to cross Hurontario Street.

Transit services will be impacted by these construction works, including a detour for MiWay Route 8. Please visit www.miway.ca/updates for updates on your bus route.

In an effort to expedite the work at Mineola and Hurontario, our crews will be working continuously overnight on the intersection guideway starting Monday August 12th to Friday August 23rd. At that point, all guideway and track installation work will be within the hours of 7am to 5pm.

While we understand, this is very inconvenient to the community, this expedited effort will ensure the work is completed and the intersection will be fully open in time for the start of the new school year.

Traffic signal timings will be adjusted to keep people moving. Pedestrian crossings will be maintained at a signalized crosswalk. Please follow the signs installed to assist with navigating around the closure.

Peel APK Project Work in Waterworks Park

By Resources, Ward 1

The Region of Peel are currently installing several new underground valve chambers on the southern portion of the Waterworks Park (within Peel Property) located on East Avenue. The area where our work is currently ongoing has already been fenced off and work has begun, as shown on the attached map in red. A construction notice was hand delivered to residents on Montbeck Crescent before the beginning of this work informing them of the construction. (This work is unrelated to the future reservoir for which a Class EA is currently ongoing).

As part of our work it was discovered that there is a need to excavate a portion of the 600mm watermain that runs through the park from the Treatment Plant to Lakeshore Rd. E, to do some restraining work on the watermain. For a period of about 4-6 weeks a portion of the northern end of the Waterworks park will be fenced off (all within Peel property) to do this work, as shown on the attached map in orange.

NOTICE OF PRE-DESIGN FIELD INVESTIGATION Beach Street Sewage Pumping Station Diversion Aviation Road, Caven Street, East Avenue, Hampton Crescent, Lakeshore Road East, and Lakeside Avenue

By Announcement, Resources, Ward 1

NOTICE OF PRE-DESIGN FIELD INVESTIGATION
Beach Street Sewage Pumping Station Diversion Aviation Road, Caven Street, East Avenue, Hampton Crescent, Lakeshore Road East, and Lakeside Avenue

Peel Region is undertaking investigations related to the installation of a new sanitary sewer system in your area. Sanitary sewers are underground pipes that carry wastewater from your home to a wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater is created when water goes down the drain or is flushed down the toilet. As pipes age and our population grows, we need to repair and replace older sewers to keep providing high quality wastewater services to you.

As we plan for future construction, we will be in your neighborhood conducting field investigations along Aviation Road, Caven Street, East Avenue, Hampton Crescent, Lakeshore Road East, and Lakeside Avenue.
• We will survey your street and use temporary spray paint or flags to mark the location of underground gas, hydro, and cable on roads, driveways, and lawns.
• We may drill holes to collect soil samples, determine ground conditions, or confirm utility locations. These holes may be drilled in the road or the municipal right-of-way, the land owned by the municipality between the street and your water service box. (A water service box is a small, round metal valve in your driveway or lawn that typically marks your front property line.)
• We will take pictures and record video to help ensure that we restore the area as close as possible to its former condition, after construction takes place.
We expect these activities to take place between July 2024 and May 2025.

Contractor and working hours
The work will be completed by various contractors under contract to Peel Region. The contractors normal working hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. These hours are consistent with the City of Mississauga bylaws.

Traffic impacts
There may be minor traffic disruptions during these activities. If we must reroute traffic, we will place signs giving directions.

LRT Upcoming Construction Impacts

By Announcement, Hurontario LRT, Ward 1

Metrolinx work related to the Hazel McCallion Line that will impact your community.

As work progresses on the Hazel McCallion LRT project, crews will be doing road widening works between Inglewood Drive and Indian Valley Trail along the west side of Hurontario Street. These works are scheduled to take place from as early as July 5 to July 31, 2024.

To safely accommodate these works, driveways for properties within this stretch will be intermittently and partially impacted between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday for up to four hours. To accommodate motorists needing to enter and exit driveways impacted during working hours, a flag person and steel plates will be used to provide immediate access to the property once the curb machine passes through.

During this time, asphalt and concrete curbs will be removed, followed by excavation, curb preparation, concrete pour, and paving. Once the roadway has been widened, guideway construction in the area can begin later this year.

Immediately impacted property owners were informed over email and hand delivered a physical notice last week. This notice has also been included in our upcoming newsletter and on Metrolinx.com.
