Tele Town Hall on Tuesday, May 5 beginning at 6 p.m.

The City of Mississauga will provide important updates to residents on the latest COVID-19 news via a Tele Town Hall on Tuesday, May 5 beginning at 6 p.m.

The City continues to address pandemic concerns and will inform the public and local businesses about what the City is doing to protect their health and safety.

Residents will be able to listen and ask questions to an expert group of panelists from the City, Peel Region Public Health, Trillium Health Partners, Peel Regional Police and Peel Regional Paramedic Services. City Councillors and senior staff will also be available.

Panelists will include:

  • Mayor Bonnie Crombie, City of Mississauga
  • Janice Baker, City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer, City of Mississauga
  • Tim Beckett, Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management, City of Mississauga
  • Dr. Lawrence Loh, Medical Officer of Health, Peel Region Public Health
  • Michelle DiEmanuele, President and CEO, Trillium Health Partners
  • Nancy Polsinelli, Interim Chief Administrative Officer, Region of Peel
  • Chief Nish Duraiappah, Peel Regional Police
  • Peter Dundas, Chief and Director, Peel Regional Paramedic Services

Residents who wish to participate in the session can do so in the following three ways:

  1. Pre-register: residents who wish to participate in the session are encouraged to register their telephone number in advance at the following link: mississauga.ca/townhall

An Appeal from The Compass

It would be an understatement to say that a lot has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic first affected our lives.

But, at The Compass, what has not changed is our commitment to our community and our dedication to helping those in need. We continue to prepare custom, pick-up food orders for our clients, as requested over the phone or online. For drop-ins, we are distributing hampers at the door to help them until their next visit. We also have a volunteer working remotely to assist clients with CERB applications.

The kind of change we have experienced in the last six weeks has made many of us feel stressed and anxious. Stress and anxiety can affect our physical and mental health, and our relationships. Can you imagine what it would be like to go through this time without money to buy food or pay rent? That is the uncertainty a number of our clients are facing.

The Compass is grateful to be here to support the vulnerable in our community, and we can only do that with your help. Our volunteers are our biggest supporters, and right now many of our volunteers are playing an important part in the fight against COVID-19 by staying at home. We are all in this together.

A core team of volunteers is working on site at The Compass, with the number of volunteers in the market reduced from 15+ to six, so we can maintain physical distancing. A number of volunteers are working remotely, helping with pick-ups, sharing our social media messages and letting the community know how people can support The Compass at this time.

Our hours have also been extended, so we are now distributing food Mondays from Noon to 7:30 p.m., and Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Clients schedule their weekly pick-up time, and place orders for custom hampers on our website. On arrival, clients are greeted outside from a safe distance and called by name to pick up their hamper. We have taken many steps to ensure everyone’s safety.

We are also grateful to the many businesses across the city that are working hard to keep us going. We have received meals from Paramount Fine Foods, Park Royal Fish & Chips, Pump House Grille and My Secret Kitchen to name a few. And we have received food donations from Loblaws, Sobeys, Winners, HomeSense and more.

Our greatest need right now is for financial donations, which allow us to immediately buy the most-needed supplies at lower-than-retail prices. With hard work and communication we can all get through this together. Lucie Zima, a long-time Compass volunteer, is hopeful that, “when the dust settles, our core values as a society—kindness, gentleness, patience, mindfulness and generosity of spirit—will prevail. What a wonderful result from an unprecedentedly tumultuous time that would be.”

 

 

Make a Secure Donation Online
We want to give a shoutout to a new local initiative called Masks For Meals. Inspired by the growing need for food banks as people have lost their jobs, some people in the Mississauga/Oakville area are now sewing masks to help slow the spread of COVID-19, and distributing them in exchange for donations to local food banks like The Compass. The goal is to expand this program across Mississauga and Oakville.

Essential Spring Maintenance Work Continues in the City of Mississauga

While the City continues taking action in response to COVID-19, essential spring maintenance work is already underway around the city. Works operations crews have been providing maintenance work and repairs to infrastructure (e.g., roads, sidewalks) such as pot hole/asphalt repairs, debris clean-up, catchbasin and drain cleaning and more. Street sweeping is scheduled to begin next month.

In addition, the City’s parks and forestry crews have continued to care for City parks and natural areas, as well as responding to emergency and high priority service requests for tree clean-up.

“I would like to thank our staff for ensuring our city’s roads and sidewalks continue to remain among the best in the GTA even during these challenging times,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Their work ensures Mississauga stays running, whether that’s continued protection and restoration of our green spaces or making our roads safe and accessible for those who need to travel on them. Mississauga continues to work for residents.”

Mickey Frost, Director, Works Operations and Maintenance added, “We have a dedicated team responding to emergency and priority service requests to ensure the City’s continued responsibilities to the public. At the same time, we’re following all public health safety protocol when out in the field for the safety of our work crew and the public.”

As spring clean-up work is done around the city, works operations crews will focus primarily on major roads and in commercial/industrial areas where physical distancing from the public is more likely. Work in residential areas will only occur if there is a safety or emergency need.

Residents can also help keep their neighbourhood and street clear of debris by not sweeping any yard waste onto the road. Yard waste should be bagged for regular yard waste collection.

For the safety of frontline staff and contractors, physical distancing rules apply for the public and will be enforced by the City’s Security Officers. Residents should also respect all barricades and signage at work sites.

 

 

City of Mississauga Announces New Commissioner of Community Services

The City of Mississauga has selected Shari Lichterman as the new Commissioner of Community Services effective May 16, 2020. Lichterman has been the Director of Recreation for the City since 2015. She replaces Paul Mitcham, who will transition to become the new City Manager on May 16, 2020.

“I am pleased to welcome Shari to the City’s Leadership Team as Commissioner of Community Services,” said Paul Mitcham, Commissioner, Community Services. “I have had the pleasure of working with Shari for the past few years and am pleased to have her leading our Community Services team. Shari brings with her extensive background and experience in recreation, programming, finance, performance management and strategic partnerships. She will be a great asset to an already strong leadership team. She is well-positioned to work with Council, the community and staff to continue to deliver quality and excellence through all lines of business provided by the Community Services Department.”

Mississauga City Council passed a by-law to appoint Lichterman to the position at its Council meeting today.

In her new role as Commissioner, Lichterman will report to into the City Manager’s Office and will oversee the following divisions: Culture; Fire and Emergency Services; Library; Parks, Forestry and Environment; and Recreation.

These business areas provide programs, services and opportunities to meet leisure and recreational needs, support education and learning, provide unique cultural experiences, offer diverse green spaces for residents to enjoy and deliver emergency planning and fire services.

“I am proud to work for the City of Mississauga and am committed to continuing to provide residents with the programs and services that enrich their quality of life,” said Lichterman. “In my new role, I look forward to working with all Community Services staff, the City’s Leadership Team and working closer with Mayor and Council.”

Prior to joining the City of Mississauga, Lichterman served as Vice-President of Eastern Operations at Canlan Ice Sports Corp. In this role, she had financial and operational responsibility for ice and multi-sport facilities in Ontario, Quebec and the United States. Prior to her experience at Canlan, Lichterman was an owner and the Director of Operations for Firland Management LLC, a consulting and management company specializing in ice arenas and recreational facilities.

Lichterman has a Masters Certificate in Municipal Leadership from the Schulich School of Business at York University, a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Carleton University as well as designations as a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Management Accountant.

She is a proud resident of Mississauga where she lives together with her husband and two children.

Garbage, recycling and organics

There are no changes to garbage, recycling or organics collection.

As of April 20, every household can place up to 2 extra garbage bags at the curb on their garbage collection day, without garbage tags.

Bulky items that do not fit into your bin or garbage bags will not be picked up:

  • at the curb,
  • in apartments/condominiums
  • or accepted at Community Recycling Centres.

Spring curbside battery pick up is suspended.

Put gloves, masks and other home healthcare waste in your garbage, not in recycling.

In-person garbage bag tag sales are suspended at all municipal facilities in Peel.

Item drop-off

Peel CRCs are currently not accepting electronics, tires, large appliances (such as stoves, fridges and dishwashers) or bulky items.

Fees and items for purchase

  • As of April 15, disposal fees are waived.
  • Rain barrel and backyard composter sales have been suspended.
  • Compost sales have been suspended.
  • Kitchen container sales have been suspended.
