The City of Mississauga will provide important updates to residents on the latest COVID-19 news via a Tele Town Hall on Tuesday, May 5 beginning at 6 p.m.

The City continues to address pandemic concerns and will inform the public and local businesses about what the City is doing to protect their health and safety.

Residents will be able to listen and ask questions to an expert group of panelists from the City, Peel Region Public Health, Trillium Health Partners, Peel Regional Police and Peel Regional Paramedic Services. City Councillors and senior staff will also be available.

Panelists will include:

  • Mayor Bonnie Crombie, City of Mississauga
  • Janice Baker, City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer, City of Mississauga
  • Tim Beckett, Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management, City of Mississauga
  • Dr. Lawrence Loh, Medical Officer of Health, Peel Region Public Health
  • Michelle DiEmanuele, President and CEO, Trillium Health Partners

City of Mississauga Announces New Director of Development and Design

The City of Mississauga has selected Chris Rouse as the new Director, Development and Design in Planning and Building effective Monday, June 1, 2020. Rouse is currently the City’s Planning Manager for the North area. He replaces Lesley Pavan, who is retiring from the City on May 29, 2020.

“I am pleased to welcome Chris to the Planning and Building Department’s leadership team,” said Andrew Whittemore, Commissioner of Planning and Building. “Chris will be leading the Development and Design Division for the City. He brings a wealth of experience to this role having held a variety of positions during his career including managing a team of planners, designers and landscape architects over the last nine years. Chris knows Mississauga extremely well and will add tremendous insight into our future planning initiatives.”

In his new role as Director, Rouse will oversee the Development and Design Division, which is responsible for processing and reviewing development applications, performing proactive design work and special studies and consultations including landscape, streetscape and urban design policy. The Division is also responsible for master planning and providing design advice and information regarding design-related matters to City Council, the public, developers, consultants, and other stakeholders.

Rouse joined the City of Mississauga in 1993 as a volunteer. He has subsequently held six different positions within the Development and Design Division. His experience ranges from small residential infill projects, redevelopment of historical buildings and new buildings within historical districts to small and large industrial, commercial and institutional projects as well as industrial and residential developments.

“I am proud to work for the City of Mississauga and am looking forward to continuing to provide community planning services that will help shape, build and create an inclusive, complete and innovative world-class city,” said Rouse. “In my new role, I look forward to working closer with the City’s Leadership Team and as well as with Mayor and Council.”

Rouse holds a Degree in (Urban) Geography from the University of Guelph and a degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Ryerson University. He is a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP) and is a Registered Professional Planner (RPP) with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute. In his leisure time, he enjoys fishing and spending time with his wife and four children at the family cottage.

An Appeal from The Compass

It would be an understatement to say that a lot has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic first affected our lives.

But, at The Compass, what has not changed is our commitment to our community and our dedication to helping those in need. We continue to prepare custom, pick-up food orders for our clients, as requested over the phone or online. For drop-ins, we are distributing hampers at the door to help them until their next visit. We also have a volunteer working remotely to assist clients with CERB applications.

The kind of change we have experienced in the last six weeks has made many of us feel stressed and anxious. Stress and anxiety can affect our physical and mental health, and our relationships. Can you imagine what it would be like to go through this time without money to buy food or pay rent? That is the uncertainty a number of our clients are facing.

The Compass is grateful to be here to support the vulnerable in our community, and we can only do that with your help. Our volunteers are our biggest supporters, and right now many of our volunteers are playing an important part in the fight against COVID-19 by staying at home. We are all in this together.

A core team of volunteers is working on site at The Compass, with the number of volunteers in the market reduced from 15+ to six, so we can maintain physical distancing. A number of volunteers are working remotely, helping with pick-ups, sharing our social media messages and letting the community know how people can support The Compass at this time.

Our hours have also been extended, so we are now distributing food Mondays from Noon to 7:30 p.m., and Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Clients schedule their weekly pick-up time, and place orders for custom hampers on our website. On arrival, clients are greeted outside from a safe distance and called by name to pick up their hamper. We have taken many steps to ensure everyone’s safety.

We are also grateful to the many businesses across the city that are working hard to keep us going. We have received meals from Paramount Fine Foods, Park Royal Fish & Chips, Pump House Grille and My Secret Kitchen to name a few. And we have received food donations from Loblaws, Sobeys, Winners, HomeSense and more.

Our greatest need right now is for financial donations, which allow us to immediately buy the most-needed supplies at lower-than-retail prices. With hard work and communication we can all get through this together. Lucie Zima, a long-time Compass volunteer, is hopeful that, “when the dust settles, our core values as a society—kindness, gentleness, patience, mindfulness and generosity of spirit—will prevail. What a wonderful result from an unprecedentedly tumultuous time that would be.”

 

 

Make a Secure Donation Online
We want to give a shoutout to a new local initiative called Masks For Meals. Inspired by the growing need for food banks as people have lost their jobs, some people in the Mississauga/Oakville area are now sewing masks to help slow the spread of COVID-19, and distributing them in exchange for donations to local food banks like The Compass. The goal is to expand this program across Mississauga and Oakville.

City of Mississauga Donates Spring Flowers to Health Care Professionals

The City of Mississauga is donating approximately 1,500 pansies, ranunculus and primrose as a gesture of thanks to hospital workers and health care providers at Trillium Health Partners.

“We are incredibly grateful to our hospital and health care heroes who are on the front lines battling the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “This is a small gesture but one we believe shows Mississauga’s support for the dedicated men and women who courageously go to work to keep us healthy and safe. They are working while we stay home so that together, we can flatten the curve. On behalf of Council, we salute our health care heroes at Trillium Health Partners. These flowers are a sign of spring and brighter days ahead. I hope they bring much needed light and joy during this very difficult time. ”

“The staff at Trillium Health Partners are working long hours under difficult circumstances,” said Caroline Riseboro, President and CEO of Trillium Health Partners Foundation. “This is a lovely and moving gesture from the City of Mississauga, one which reminds us that, even in dark times, beauty and renewal persist. On behalf of my colleagues at the hospital, a special thanks to Mayor Crombie and the City.”

“Plant materials for the City’s spring planting program, typically used in planters and gardens across the City, are ordered eight months in advance and could not be cancelled,” said Jodi Robillos, Director, Parks, Forestry and Environment.  “Our parks and forestry staff are preparing for the onset of spring which includes litter pick up and the mowing of turf but horticulture is not an essential service.  Rather than dispose of this plant material, a proposal was developed at the request of Mayor Crombie to donate the plants to hospital workers and health care providers at Trillium.”

City of Mississauga staff continue to provide essential services including waste collection, priority maintenance, legislated inspections, contract administration and bylaw enforcement during the COVID-19 crisis.

The City has partnered with Humberview Maintenance Group Ltd., Royalview Landscaping and Winsom Landscape Contractors who volunteered their staff time to collect and deliver the plants for distribution to each health care professionals as they exited the Trillium Hospitals professionals as they exited the Trillium Hospitals.
