Community EV Day
Stop by the Community EV Day event on Saturday, June 22 at Burnhamthorpe Community Centre to learn more about EVs. You’ll have the chance to learn more about electric vehicles, and test drive an electric vehicle on a drop-in basis. You’ll hear from the Mississauga EV Society about what it’s like to own an EV, check out some of the City’s electric fleet vehicles, participate in micromobility demonstrations and learn ways to take action to make Mississauga more sustainable and climate change resilient. The City’s Forestry team will also be on site with a tree giveaway.

Test drive an electric vehicle
From June 6 to 30, the City is also partnering with Plug’n Drive so residents can get behind the wheel of an EV for a test drive.
In partnership with Plug’n Drive, the City is hosting electric vehicle test drives. Bookings are available every Thursday to Sunday beginning on June 6 until June 30, 2024. You will have the opportunity to learn about the environmental and economic benefits of EVs, ask questions and test drive one of the latest models.

EV chargers in Mississauga
The City is increasing charging infrastructure through commitments made in Mississauga’s Climate Change Action Plan. To date, the City has installed 30 public charging ports, adding to more than 400 charging ports already available across the city.
Making the switch to EVs and climate impact
As part of the Climate Change Action Plan, the City is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and is working to provide educational resources for residents to reduce their carbon footprint. One action residents can take is to switch to electric vehicles.
An electric vehicle can be fully or partially (hybrid) electric and is known to be efficient and durable, requires less maintenance and can have a longer lifetime than traditional gas-powered vehicles. With the rising cost of gas, switching to electric vehicles can help you save money on fuel, and can also reduce your carbon emissions by up to 90 per cent. Adopting electric vehicles can lead to a greener, more sustainable future for transportation.

JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes is the largest fundraising event in Canada that unites the type 1 diabetes community and raises funds to accelerate T1D research. The Walk took place at Lakefront Promenade on May 26th and once again was a big success! Congratulations and look forward to next year.

The MiWay Student Ambassador Program, celebrated for its comprehensive strategy in teaching students the benefits of using public transportation, is excited to announce this year’s competition winners.

Throughout the program, student ambassadors have the opportunity to earn volunteer hours and rewards while learning about MiWay routes, accessing transit information, and providing valuable feedback directly to MiWay. This initiative reflects MiWay’s commitment to engaging with the youth of Mississauga and encouraging a new generation of public transit users.
“Embracing public transit as a young adult isn’t just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about taking a step towards independence, sustainability, and connectedness. Whether it’s the ride to school, a community centre, or to see friends and family, each ride is an opportunity to reduce your carbon footprint, engage with your community, and inspire your peers to do the same,” said Eve Wiggins, Director of Transit.
MiWay Student Ambassador Program Winners
This year’s competition saw enthusiastic participation from students across Mississauga, with notable achievements:
- First Place: Amirthan & Anannthan from Glenforest Secondary School take home the grand prize of one year of free transit on MiWay and Apple AirPods Pro.
- Second Place: Muhammad & Karan from Stephen Lewis Secondary School have earned themselves Apple AirPods and a $100 PRESTO card.
- Third Place: Abdullah & Sarthak from Erindale Secondary School will receive a $100 Amazon gift card and a $100 PRESTO card.
MiWay Ambassador Program 2024-2025
The MiWay Ambassador Program will kick off this September and continue engaging students during the 2024-2025 school year. More than 70 applications from 29 high schools have already been received, and the deadline for applications is Friday, May 31. MiWay extends its sincere congratulations to all winners and participants for their dedication and creativity in promoting public transit within their communities.

Come out to the Invasive Species Awareness Fair at Erindale Park on May 25.

During the event, residents will learn more about non-native invasive plants and emerging invasive pests. Residents will also have the opportunity to learn how to detect invasive species while exploring Erindale Park on a guided walk, join a garlic mustard pulling competition and participate in other family-friendly activities.
At the fair, there will also be goats to showcase a new and unique approach to managing invasive plant species – goat grazing. The initiative to use goat grazing as an invasive plant control method is new and unique to the area. There will also be baby goats for residents to meet.

Get involved as a Mississauga Nature Steward
Become a Mississauga Nature Steward and help City staff remove invasive plants in parks and natural areas. As a Nature Steward, you will be provided with training and supplies to work independently or have the opportunity to participate in staff-led events to work alongside City staff and other members of the public.
The City is hosting five stewardship events to learn what garlic mustard is and how to properly remove and dispose of the invasive plant while working alongside City staff.

The eagerly awaited return of the Lakeview Farmers and Artisan Market is set to return for its fifth season at Mississauga’s Small Arms Inspection Building on May 26th, 2024, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Held weekly on Sundays from May 26th to October 27th, the Market features local, sustainable, organic, and artisanal products, which provide an important source of income for local farmers, growers, producers, and artisans.
Throughout its 26-week run, the Market will feature more than 30 local farmers and food vendors, as well as a bi-weekly artisan market with an additional 60 rotating vendors. Whether visitors are seeking farm-fresh produce, artisanal crafts, gourmet treats, or unique handmade goods, there will be something for everyone at the Market.
The Market operates hybridly indoors and outdoors, with local buskers, entertainment, a cafe, and much more. Throughout the season, the Market will also be home to exciting activities such as a Garlic Festival, Vintage Clothing Market, Multicultural Festival, and many more, where additional vendors, games, and workshops will be available for attendees to enjoy.
