Mississauga Allocated $20.968 Million from Federal-Provincial Safe Restart Agreement

By Covid-19, Events, Issues, Resources

December 17, 2020

This week, the Government of Ontario announced Phase 2 of Municipal Operating funding as part of the Safe Restart Agreement between the federal government and the provinces and territories. The City of Mississauga is receiving $20.968 million in 2021 as part of the second round of funding through the municipal relief stream. This funding will offset the 2020 deficit, and the remainder will be used to offset anticipated 2021 pressures. This investment builds upon the first phase of the federal-provincial Safe Restart Agreement announced this summer and will help municipal partners deliver critical services during COVID-19. Mississauga Library Tops One Million eBook and Audiobook Checkouts in 2020

By Events, Resources

December 17, 2021

Mississauga Library surpassed one million digital book checkouts in November 2020, two months earlier than anticipated.

This milestone demonstrates the continued growth and importance of libraries and digital lending of eBooks and Audiobooks at a time when the City’s library locations are faced with building closures and service changes due to COVID-19. Mississauga Library is one of 75 public library systems worldwide on track to surpass one million checkouts by the end of this year.

“Mississauga residents love to read and these results show it,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. ”Now more than ever, it’s important that people of all ages have access to a wide range of eBooks and Audiobooks. I congratulate the library staff and our residents for reaching this milestone two months earlier than expected!” Read More

Be Safe When On the Road This Holiday Season

By Events, Issues

December 17, 2020

The City of Mississauga is reminding all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, micro-mobility users and drivers, to be safe this holiday season. As many gear up for the holidays, streets, sidewalks, trails, cycling paths and intersections will be busier as many people are distracted with to-do lists, errands and outdoor activities.

“While the hustle and bustle is going to look different this holiday season, with many of us staying home and following COVID-19 guidelines, road users are still travelling throughout Mississauga to get to work, run errands and volunteer their time,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Over the course of the holidays, we need to work together to prevent collisions on our roads, as no loss of life is acceptable. No matter what time of the year, our goal is to achieve safety for all road users.” Read More

Dog Waste Containers in Parks Surveys

By Events, Issues

The City’s Parks, Forestry and Environment team is looking for resident feedback to help us plan for the future of the City’s in-ground dog waste containers in parks. Our current program has piloted containers in select parks and leash-free areas around the City. We are looking to gauge residents’ awareness of the program and their preferences for potential future container locations.

Have your say! Help us plan for the future of Mississauga’s in-ground dog waste containers in parks. Take the online survey by Thursday, January 14, 2021: http://bit.ly/dog-waste-survey.

Update on Proposed Dixie Plan Project

By Events, Issues, Planning & Development

I would like to clarify the status of this proposed development.

I was approached by the two owners of Dixie Mall, Slate Group and Choice REIT as they indicated they had recently purchased the property and were looking into the future with regards to redevelopment.

At the time I indicated to them that they would be best served to have an introduction and collaborative approach with the community.  They initiated this by hosting an introduction and a visioning session at Dixie Mall just over a year ago and since then, a survey website has been hosted by them to take in community comments and thoughts.

I asked that they reach out to the Ward’s Ratepayer Presidents as they wanted to initiate a series of dialogues, introduce themselves, and show what they wanted to submit to the City.  Each Ratepayer President agreed to be contacted by the Slate/Choice Group, and they set up virtual calls with each association which I attend as a guest.

Typically public meetings, for the community to provide input, usually occur once the application has been submitted.  At this point, there has been NO application received by the City.

Once an application is received, it will be reviewed by a number of City Departments; public meetings will take place where the entire community will have the opportunity to be engaged.

I have been recording all comments the community has provided my office and also the messages from the Ratepayer engagement virtual calls.  I will ensure that all of these comments will be delivered to the Planning Department at the City.

I expect complete transparency on this and all developments in the Ward.

Thank you,

Stephen
