Road Safety Week May 17th to May 23rd

As a member of the Road Safety Committee and as we embark on the festivities of the first long-weekend of the summer, the Victoria Day Holiday, Peel Regional Police will be recognizing Road Safety Week starting on Tuesday, May 17th to Monday, May 23rd.

Road Safety is a high priority for PRP and part of our Regional Community and Safety Wellbeing Plan. We launched our annual Project Erase and Project Noisemaker on May 1st. During the warmer weather months, ERASE will target street racing activities in Peel Region and Noisemaker will address motor vehicles with modified and/or excessively loud exhaust systems on the roads.

During Road Safety Week, our Road Safety Service (RSS) will focus on the following preventive and social development measures:

  1. Distracted driving – Tuesday, May 17 and Wednesday, May 18
  2. Pedestrian Safety – Wednesday, May 18
  3. Seatbelts – Thursday, May 19
  4. Prolific drivers – Thursday, May 19
  5. Aggressive/stunt driving – Friday, May 20
  6. Impaired driving (RIDE) – Friday, May 20 through to Sunday, May 22
  7. Road Watch – Monday, May 23

RSS would welcome your participation in any of the activities throughout the week. If you would like to observe our RSS unit in action then please let us know and we would be pleased to coordinate a time and an activity of your choosing based on your schedule. Please note RIDE takes place late into the evening.

All of the days will be committed to the enforcement of all aspects of road safety despite the prioritization of focuses on certain days. Statistics will be gathered on each shift and at the end of the week, a final total of the statistics will be shared in a media release, which will be shared with you.

General public awareness will be communicated on PRP social media outlets. There will be an educational component where RSS will work in collaboration with Divisional Mobilization Unit and crime prevention.

As always, we encourage you to share this information with your residents and feel free to tweet PRP’s posts starting on Tuesday.

Also, please mark your calendar for Saturday, June 18th, RSS will be hosting their first Road Safety Open House which will focus on youth, pedestrian, and cycle safety and awareness at Sir Robert Peel Centre (22 Division). An invitation including more details will be shared with you in the coming weeks.
