Mississauga Takes Bold Action To Combat Racism, Discrimination And Hate With The “One Mississauga Campaign”

By Campaign

In a bold step toward building a more inclusive and unified city, the City of Mississauga is proud to launch the One Mississauga campaign.

This public education initiative challenges residents to stop, look and think about different forms of racism, discrimination and hatred experienced by members of our community using bold messaging. It was developed and designed in partnership with the City’s Combating Racism Discrimination Hatred Advisory Committee (CRDHAC), who noted the City must go beyond tolerance with this initiative and strive for unity – as we are ‘One Mississauga.’

Featuring bold illustrative designs that highlight common comments and behaviours, big and small that can unintentionally hurt others, One Mississauga calls on people to recognize and challenge racism, discrimination and hate in all forms. Following this first phase, the City will work to engage community groups and organizations to create community-specific campaigns to address specific lived experiences.

Hate motivated incidents and hate crimes are on the rise in Mississauga and Peel Region. The City of Mississauga plays an important role in bringing the community together and working with partners like Peel Regional Police, the Countering Hate Committee and others to combat racism, discrimination and hatred in all its forms. The rise in hate-motivated crime reinforces the importance of the City’s zero-tolerance position on racism, discrimination, and hatred in Mississauga.

Quotes

“Mississauga is a city that thrives on its diversity, and the One Mississauga campaign is a testament to our commitment to fostering a community where everyone feels they belong. We cannot ignore the growing presence of hate in our communities and so we’re taking a firm stand. Racism, discrimination, and hate have no place here. Together, we can continue building upon a city that is rooted in respect, understanding and where all residents feel safe and valued.” – Carolyn Parrish, Mayor, City of Mississauga.

Get Your Batteries Ready For Pickup

By Resources

BRAMPTON, ON (April 14, 2025) – Peel Region will be collecting single-use and rechargeable batteries at the curb starting April 21.

Check your waste collection calendar to find your battery pickup day.

Here’s how to prepare and set out your batteries for collection:

  • Put your used single-use and rechargeable batteries in a transparent, sealed bag.
  • Tape the ends of all rechargeable and 9V batteries.
  • On your battery pickup day, place your battery bag on top of your closed green bin. If you don’t have a green bin, place your battery bag beside your recycling bags.

Thanks to Peel residents, we’ve collected more than 240,000 kgs of batteries that could have otherwise ended up in the landfill.

If you miss your battery pickup day, don’t worry. Check RecycleYourBatteries.ca to find a free drop-off location near you to safely dispose of used and old batteries throughout the year. You can also drop off batteries for free year-round at any Community Recycling Centre near you.

Batteries should never be put in your garbage, recycling, or organics bins – they can cause fires in collection trucks and at facilities, putting workers at risk. By properly disposing of batteries, you’re helping to keep hazardous materials out of landfills, protecting our environment and our Peel community.

Water Interruption Notice – Tuesday, April 15th, from 9:00am to 5:00pm – 31 Inglewood Drive Mississauga

By Resources

The Peel Region Public Works department regularly maintains and repairs the water system to make sure you have a consistent supply of quality drinking water. Sometimes we must turn off your water supply while we do this work.

Your water will be turned off on Tuesday, April 15th, from 9:00am to 5:00pm. If we need to reschedule this work due to weather or other circumstances, we will let you know the new date and time.

Property owner/manager responsibilities during a water interruption

As a property owner/manager, it is your responsibility to:

  • Ensure maintenance, mechanical or plumbing staff are on site during the water interruption, as it may affect internal systems that rely on water such as boilers, fire suppression, and alarms.
  • Notify the fire alarm company if the interruption could affect an alarm system.
  • Have a fire watch completed during the water interruption, as the building’s sprinkler protection system will not function when the water supply is shut off.

After the water interruption

When we turn the water back on, air in the pipes may make the water cloudy and your plumbing may vibrate or make noise. We recommend removing the air by slowly turning on your taps from the lowest to the highest faucet in the building (that is, starting in the basement/first floor, and finishing on the top floor). You will likely need to run the water for 10 to 30 seconds. Run the water until it is clear, and any vibration or noise has stopped.

Important note

After the water is turned back on, we recommend checking the water meter (usually located in the basement). If it is leaking, call Water Meter Installations Dispatch at:

  • 905-791-7800 extension 3226 (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Monday to Friday)
  • 905-791-7800 extension 4409 (after hours or statutory holidays)

Notice Of Controlled Burn Near The Future Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area – April 10, 2025

By Planning & Development, Resources

Purpose:

Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is committed to keeping you informed of activities at the future Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area, 1300 Lakeshore Road East, Mississauga.

This letter is to inform you we are planning a controlled (prescribed) grassland burn on 1.55-hectare (3.83 acre) portion of the property (Figure 1). There is no public access to the park, but smoke may be seen in the area.

Figure 1. Location of the Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area and the burn area within it.

What Is A Controlled Burn?

Controlled burns are fires that are carefully set and managed to create, maintain and protect prairie and grassland habitat. The burns are done in a way that helps native plants grow, while minimizing impacts to wildlife.

Why Are We Doing This?

The goal is to remove invasive, non-native plants so a healthy native grassland with diverse species can establish and thrive.

How Will The Burn Be Controlled?

CVC has contracted Lands and Forests Consulting (LFC) to carry out the controlled burn. The controlled burn will follow a detailed plan prepared by LFC. The plan covers all aspects of the burn process and has been approved by the City of Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services. Please contact us if you want a copy of the burn plan.

LFC has over 20 years of burn experience and has completed over 400 incident-free, successful burns. They hold provincial wildland firefighting standards certification. A Certified Level 3 Burn Boss will supervise the burn. Additional staff certified to nationally recognized firefighter standards will also be on site to implement the burn and manage any issues that arise. CVC staff will also be present on site.

When Will The Controlled Burn Take Place?

The one-day burn will take place between April 14th and May 2nd and will be completed in approximately one hour.

CVC staff and LFC will determine the ideal date and time to conduct the burn, based on site and weather conditions.

How Will Residents And Businesses Be Notified About The Controlled Burn?

  • A ‘notice to neighbours’ will be delivered to neighbouring residents and businesses
  • Signs/notices will be posted along Lakeshore Road East
  • Information posted on our website at cvc.ca/jtlca
  • CVC’s social media platforms: X @CVC_CA and Facebook @CreditValleyConservation

What Do Residents And Businesses Need To Do During The Controlled Burn?

LFC will apply techniques to minimize smoke and control its movement in the air. However, changing weather conditions may cause smoke and briefly impact nearby homes and businesses. We have advised residents to close windows on the day of the burn. People with sensitivity to smoke are encouraged to stay indoors at the time of the burn.

Connect With Us For More Information:

We’ll share information and updates about the controlled burn on our website at cvc.ca/jtlca and on our social media platforms.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 647-202-9830 or email aaron.root@cvc.ca.
