January 21, 2021 – The City of Mississauga had drafted the Lakeshore Connecting Communities Plan to improve and increase mobility across our Lakeshore corridor. This funding announcement for the Lakeshore corridor is for the construction of a New Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Corridor along Lakeshore Road in Mississauga that includes three stations. The construction is for a dedicated two-way bus rapid transit corridor on Lakeshore Road East and Deta Road, as well as separated bike lanes and sidewalks. It will help support the growth outlined in the City’s Official Plan and Local Area Plan. The Bus Rapid Transit component from East Avenue to Deta Road was submitted for consideration to the Federal and Provincial Governments as a part of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Plan (ICIP).
As the Ward 1 Councillor for this project, Stephen Dasko applauds the decision to invest in this much needed infrastructure. Councillor Dasko stressed the need for the Province to align its growth policies in order that the higher order transit is done acknowledging the Lakeshore’s overall limitations and its close proximity to Lake Ontario.
“This is welcome news for the community. To have funding partners that will help build transit, ensure improved safety and mobility with separated bike lanes and sidewalks is deeply appreciated. However, much more work is required to ensure that this funding fits in to a larger plan for Lakeshore that embraces that feel of a village and open space along the corridor,” said Dasko
The continued work on the Lakeshore corridor and efforts by the local community, Mayor Bonnie Crombie, City Manager Paul Mitcham, City Staff, and our Federal and Provincial partners is essential to having a community that will make our City an outstanding place to live and work.
