Construction Laydown Site Preparation near Troy Street

A Notice from Metrolinx:

Dear resident,

Construction of the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is ramping up along Hurontario Street, so we wanted to take this opportunity to (re)introduce ourselves in advance of some work beginning in your community. Starting in April, you will begin to see construction crews mobilize on site at the end of Troy Street, between CN Railway and the Petro-Canada. You will see site trailers and offices, material storage and onsite parking. Work will begin with tree protection and installation of a fence to secure the area. If any trees need to be removed, they will be replaced according to City of Mississauga bylaws. Read More

Upcoming Hurontario LRT Project in Port Credit

Metrolinx is providing notification that Mobilinx will be starting work in the parking lot of Port Credit GO Station in the near future. Crews will place fencing around working areas on site in both the North and South parking lots. Fencing will not only help keep commuters and community members safe, it will also offer the project the first big signage opportunity in the community. Read More

Hurontario LRT: Virtual Open House – Nov 23-Dec 4, 2020

Today, Metrolinx launched its Fall Virtual Open House for the Hurontario LRT.  This two-week online event, continuing through to December 4, will share the work that has been done so far and what to expect in 2021 as major construction begins.  There will be photos, slideshow presentations and a video that captures the excitement of the project.

Hurontario LRT Project Virtual Trade Show

Due to continued public health concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic,  employment and procurement trade shows will be held virtually this year.  Mobilinx will post presentations on local employment and procurement for the Hurontario LRT project on its website.

The Employment presentation provides the public with resume-writing advice, interview techniques, and list the attributes and skills Mobilinx is seeking in its employees. The Procurement presentation details the benefits of sourcing local businesses for supplies, products and services, as well as the requirements needed to become a Mobilinx vendor.  The virtual trade show is accessible at Mobilinx.ca/opportunities.

MiWay Changes Express Route on Hurontario due to LRT Construction

Effective August 3, MiWay will revise Route 103-Hurontario Express as part of its second phase of routing changes along the Hurontario corridor. These adjustments are required to help minimize service impacts due to the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (HuLRT) construction, which began in late March.

Due to the anticipated reduction of traffic lanes south of the QEW in the upcoming months, Route 103 will no longer travel south of The Queensway to the Port Credit GO Station and instead, will travel between the Brampton Gateway Terminal and Trillium Health Partners – Mississauga Hospital, seven days a week.

Frequent service on Route 103 and other local routes on Hurontario (Routes 2 and 17) allow for convenient transfers along the Hurontario corridor. Route 2 will continue to provide local service to all stops between the City Centre Transit Terminal (CCTT) and Port Credit GO Station, and Route 17 travels between the Highway 407 Park and Ride and the CCTT, continuing to provide 24-hour service during weekdays.

MiWay reminds passengers that wearing a face covering or non-medical mask is now mandatory when riding on MiWay and inside transit terminal buildings. Children under the age of two and people with disabilities or other medical conditions that prevent them from wearing any mask are not be required to wear one. Fare collection and front door boarding have also resumed.

MiWay implemented its first phase of the Hurontario corridor routing changes in April. For details about other service changes that take effect on August 3, please visit miway.ca/aug3.

Metrolinx will be holding a Virtual Open House from June 15 – July 3

Metrolinx will be holding a Virtual Open House from June 15 – July 3 to share information about Hurontario LRT. It has been shifted to a virtual format to protect staff and the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. It can be accessed at www.metrolinxengage.com/hulrt. Members of the public will be able to ask questions that the project team will answer.

MiWay Changes Local Routes on Hurontario Corridor due to LRT Construction

Effective April 27, MiWay will implement local route changes to the Hurontario corridor to help minimize impacts on travel due to Hurontario Light Rail Transit (HuLRT) construction, which began on March 30.

The construction officially began with the removal of medians along Hurontario Street from Matheson Boulevard to Highway 407. The planned Hurontario route changes are in addition to other recent changes and daily service adjustments being made by MiWay to provide essential transit services across Mississauga in response to COVID-19.

Route changes include:

  • Route 19 Hurontario will be replaced by two new routes: Route 17 Hurontario and Route 2 Hurontario
    • Route 17 Hurontario: travels between the Highway 407 Park and Ride and the City Centre Transit Terminal and will provide 24-hour service during weekdays
    • Route 2 Hurontario: travels between the City Centre Transit Terminal and the Port Credit GO Station and will provide 24-hour service during weekdays
  • Route 19 Variants 19A, 19B and 19C will be cancelled; route 19C alternative route options to Heartland Town Centre include Route 61 Mavis or Route 66 McLaughlin
  • Route 25 Traders Loop will be revised to service to portions of the former Routes 19A and 19B

“We’ve redesigned routes along the Hurontario corridor to minimize impacts to travel during Hurontario Light Rail Transit construction,” said Geoff Marinoff, Director, Transit. “Our priority is to maintain service reliability as best we can to help customers get to where they need to be.”

Mississauga Ready to Work with Mobilinx and Metrolinx to get Hurontario LRT Up and Running

Today, Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx announced that Mobilinx has signed the contract to design, build, finance, operate and maintain Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT), a key city-building initiative and the largest transit infrastructure project to take place in Mississauga’s history.

“After more than 10 years of hard work, I’m proud to say with confidence that the Hurontario LRT is moving full steam ahead. Today marks an important milestone, which puts this project on track to completion. We know construction will be challenging, but I look forward to getting shovels in the ground and trains running up and down our City’s busiest corridor soon,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “The Hurontario LRT will get people moving, break congestion, lower our City’s GHG emissions, and help us better manage the growth happening in our City. By 2041, we anticipate that nearly 25 per cent of all jobs in our City will be within 1 kilometre of the LRT. It will be a game-changer for Mississauga and I cannot wait to take my first ride on the new line.”

Major construction is expected to begin in early 2020. Ongoing early works to move underground utilities will continue along the corridor.

“City staff have been working closely with Metrolinx, along with the City of Brampton, to prepare for this major construction project,” said Janice Baker, City Manager and CAO. “This is a Metrolinx led project, and while the City has no direct contractual relationship with Mobilinx, we have a team of City staff who will support the construction team and provide critical input into the next phase of the project. Of highest priority will be timely communication on potential impacts and disruption during construction, and a smooth transition to an exciting new level of service on one of our busiest transit corridors.”

A Corporate Report will be presented to Mississauga Council in the coming months with an update on project agreements, as well as costs for operations and maintenance.

Background:

The new 18-km dedicated light rail transit system from Port Credit GO Station to Brampton Gateway Terminal is scheduled to be completed by late 2024. Once running, locally-assembled Alstom light rail vehicles will carry tens of thousands of passengers on a daily basis between 19 stops. Hurontario LRT will link to the Mississauga Transitway, MiWay and Brampton Transit routes, GO Stations at Port Credit and Cooksville, Square One GO Bus Terminal, and the Brampton Gateway Terminal.
