City of Mississauga COVID-19 Response: Council Meeting April 15 – Managing the Impact of COVID-19

By Covid-19

Important Updates and Safety Reminders

COVID-19 | April 15, 2020

Today, Council discussed actions and impacts in response to COVID-19 to improve safety and help mitigate impacts on residents and businesses.
“As we continue to manage this health pandemic, we ask that residents please do their part by respecting the rules for the safety of our community,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “We continue to see people disrespecting park amenity closures, not keeping a safe distance or bending the rules when it comes to gatherings with family and friends. We have also seen a rise in littering of medical gloves and masks outside grocery stores and pharmacies across our city. This is a health concern and a safety risk. Those found violating these rules will face fines. Please be good neighbours and friends and stay at home where possible. This is the only way we will help flatten the curve. We are all in this together.”

Renewal Fees Deferred for Animal and Mobile Licences

·          Renewal fees are being deferred for Pet licensing and the Mobile Licensing until June 1 or 30 days after the re-opening of public counters.
At last week’s Council meeting, our Finance team presented a report outlined the City’s current financial position.

Hiring Suspended

To assist with mitigating the financial impact of COVID-19, City of Mississauga hiring will be suspended temporarily for all positions effective end of day Tuesday, April 14. Essential services will be maintained.

Litter and Waste Dumping

  • All litter, particularly masks and gloves as well as dog waste must be disposed of properly using the appropriate waste containers available or by bringing it home.
  • Dumping household waste and garbage is unacceptable and in contravention of the City’s Debris and Anti Littering By-law and is actively being enforced. Dumping can be reported online.

Enforcement Actions

  • Security Officers are patrolling parks and are educating and enforcing emergency orders to limit gatherings of 5 or more (unless living in same household) and issuing fines of at least $750 where applicable.
  • Those found littering medical gloves, masks or any other personal protective equipment (PPE) can face littering fines starting at $365

COVID-19 Information

  • Residents can call 3-1-1 to report non-compliance
  • Set fines for non-compliance range from $750 to $1000

COVID-19 Response: New Mississauga Web Page a One-Stop Resource for Older Adults

By Covid-19

April 15, 2020

In these challenging times, the City of Mississauga is focused on supporting our older adult community. The City has launched a new web page that provides guidance for older residents  and their caregivers to help meet their needs.

“Our older adult community is one of the most vulnerable when it comes to COVID-19,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “The City’s new web page provides easy to find, at-a-glance information for older adults and caregivers. This is something that our older adults asked for and I am pleased that we are able to provide this resource to help meet their needs, enhance their well-being and improve outcomes.”

Residents can find information on symptoms and prevention, health and wellness and key emergency contacts. The web page also provides links to online Library services and free online videos, workouts and other resources to help older adults stay healthy while practicing physical distancing.

A printable information sheet is also available on the web page.

Anyone who may not be able to access the web page is advised to ask a friend or family member to assist.

For updates on actions the City is taking to help residents, visit mississauga.ca/coronavirus or follow us on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Region of Peel Waste Collection Update

By Covid-19

April 9, 2020

This morning at Regional Council I seconded a motion on waste collection. In order to deter dumping, residents will now have the opportunity to leave out up to 2 extra bags of garbage on their regular garbage week with no tags required. This does not mean you can use tags as well on extra bags. It is removal of the use of tags. You still have a maximum of 2 bags being put out.

This starts on the week of April 20. In addition we will be accepting waste drop off at the Community Recycling Centres with no fee. This will reduce any interaction with staff. Procedures to maintain distance will be in place. This is not a complete unlimited collection as was previously discussed and recommended against by staff. It is restricted to a maximum of 2 bags and no bulky items

City of Mississauga Cancels All Events and Spring Programs Up to July 3 Due to COVID-19 Impact

By Covid-19

COVID-19 | April 8, 2020

The City of Mississauga is taking additional precautionary measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic by cancelling all events and spring programs (registered and drop-in) up to July 3. This includes City-led events and events organized by external groups that require a City permit – whether at Mississauga Celebration Square, parks or other City facilities, which remain closed. At this time, no new permits will be issued.

“While our festivals and events showcase the best of Mississauga and are usually the highlight of my summer, tackling the spread of COVID-19 and keeping our City healthy is our primary focus right now,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “I look forward to showcasing Mississauga’s vibrant and diverse cultural heritage with the world once it’s safe again for large crowds to gather. In the meantime, we will continue to find ways to celebrate everything that makes Mississauga shine.”

Additionally, community and cultural groups receiving approved grant funding will continue to receive them, as this will assist with business continuity and to move forward post COVID-19. However, organizations will be required to confirm the impact that COVID-19 is having on their organization and actions that will be taken. The City will also work with event organizers to mitigate the impact of event and program cancellations and determine future event dates, if possible.

Approximately 368 events and gatherings taking place in City facilities and parks are impacted including six Canada Day events, sports tournaments, Mississauga Marathon, Carassauga, Mississauga Waterfront Festival and more.

The City will continue to reassess the situation and determine if cancellations will go beyond the July 3 date, based on consultations with Peel Public Health and the Province’s ban of social gatherings.
