Metrolinx Upcoming Construction Impacts – Updated closure dates Friday June 14th – Monday June 17th, 2024

The attached updated notice has been delivered to residents impacted by this construction within a 500 meter radius. We will also be featuring this construction notice on Metrolinx.com and electronic signs will be installed in the area to advise of the closure.

 

As construction on the Hazel McCallion Line progresses,  crews will be working continuously on sanitary repairs on Hurontario Street and Eaglewood Boulevard. This will involve the closure of the access to Eaglewood Boulevard from Hurontario St. from Friday, June 7, 2024 at 7 a.m. to Monday, June 10, 2024 at 5 a.m. Work hours will be continuous during this duration. Work could be rescheduled and delayed due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

 

A detour route to Eaglewood Boulevard will be available via Mineola Road and Crossfield Bend. During this work temporary lane closures are also required on Hurontario Street. Please follow the signs installed to assist with navigating around the lane closures. Access to emergency vehicles will be maintained.

 

In accordance with City of Mississauga Noise By-Law Exemption requirements, this notice is meant to advise that residents near the work site can expect to hear noise and vibration caused by trucks, excavators, backhoes, and other construction equipment related to this work. Some noise will also be generated by construction vehicles moving materials in a wider area.

 

The attached notice has been mailed to residents impacted by this construction between Mineola and Lakeshore. We will also be featuring this construction notice in our newsletter and on Metrolinx.com in the coming week, and electronic signs will be installed in the area to advise of the closure by Monday June 3rd.

Mississauga digs into another busy construction season

Crews are hard at work maintaining, repairing and expanding the city’s transportation and stormwater infrastructure.

The City of Mississauga’s construction season is well underway with an estimated investment of more than $116 million* in projects to repair, maintain and expand the City’s transportation infrastructure and stormwater system, such as roads, sidewalks, bridges, bike lanes, trails, stormwater drains and streetlights. This year, there are 19 new projects and eight projects continuing from 2023. Construction projects include road resurfacing, sidewalk and multi-use trail construction and bridge repairs. Construction projects also include erosion control work along creeks and dredging and maintenance of stormwater management ponds and infrastructure.

“The construction work we do in Mississauga isn’t just about fixing roads, it’s about building and maintaining a great city. It’s vital to Mississauga’s growth and development. While construction season may cause temporary inconvenience on our roads, keeping our infrastructure in a state of good repair through regular maintenance helps ensure everyone’s safety, allows us to deliver the City services you rely on, and reduces the need for emergency replacements and repairs which can be more expensive,” said Geoff Wright, Commissioner, Transportation & Works. “I want to thank Mississauga residents for their patience and co-operation as we head into this busy season, as well as the crews and City staff who work hard to complete this critical work with as minimal disruption as possible.”

Road resurfacing

The City’s Road Resurfacing Program involves replacing asphalt on the road and repairing curbs and sidewalks when needed. This year, 51 streets are scheduled to be resurfaced. When a street is being resurfaced, work can also take place on boulevards, sidewalks and the City’s portion of driveways. It is recommended that residents delay any renovations to their lawn or driveway, including repaving, until the work is complete. Personal items located close to the sidewalk or boulevard, such as lights, sprinklers, décor and temporary fencing, should also be removed to avoid damage. Residents will receive a pre-construction notice in the mail if their street is scheduled for resurfacing this year.

 

Hazel McCallion Line update

Progress is happening on Metrolinx’s Hazel McCallion Line. Track construction will continue south of Highway 403 and then south of the QEW. The southern terminus at Port Credit GO Station will continue to take shape, while construction of other platforms will continue as well. For the latest updates, follow the Hazel McCallion Line on X.

Residents interested in learning more about the City’s construction projects can use the construction map to view all projects and who to contact if there are any questions. The construction map also provides information about projects in City parks and projects from the Peel Region, Ministry of Transportation and Alectra.

Ongoing maintenance

This time of year, residents can also expect to see City crews completing annual maintenance and cleanup work to tidy up Mississauga’s shared spaces and keep everyone moving safely. This work includes filling potholes, sweeping of collector, arterial and industrial roadways, repairing sidewalks, clearing litter and debris, and getting parks, greenspaces and trails ready for the busy season.

“With the milder winter we had, we were given a great head start on this year’s construction season. For example, construction work was able to continue throughout the winter on the Burnhamthorpe Road bridge. Crews were able to finish building the working platforms, remove deteriorated concrete and reconstruct a retaining wall beside the Culham Trail,” said Sam Rogers, Director, Infrastructure Planning and Engineering Services. “Several large road projects are also anticipated to be completed this year, which residents will be excited about. These include the Goreway Drive overpass bridge in Malton, the rehabilitation of The Collegeway, and the Rathburn Road and Ponytrail Drive Integrated Road Project.”

With all of this ongoing work on the City’s roads, residents are reminded to be cautious when traveling near construction or maintenance work sites, adhere to all site signs and barricades and to be respectful. Please give crews and equipment space as they work.

Upcoming Construction at Hurontario and Mineola – May 4th 7:00 to 10:00 p.m

There is currently emergency works scheduled at the intersection of Mineola and Hurontario this Saturday, May 4 from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm.

This work has been necessitated because during the testing of sanitary pipes it was discovered that an older pipe was collapsing.

This work is occurring at the direction of the City of Mississauga and the Region of Peel.

During this work east bound traffic on Mineola will not able to make a left turn. Electronic signs will be installed to inform the motorists.

The construction notice is posted below and has been hand delivered to businesses and residents in the surrounding area.

What work is taking place?

Crews will be welding tracks and doing concrete work for guideway installations within the intersection of Hurontario Street and The Queensway. Work will begin on the north half of the intersection first. When completed, crews will shift staging over to the south half of the intersection. During this process, east-west traffic will be reduced to single lanes in each direction. Left turns will also not be permitted in the intersection. Detours routes are available via Dundas Street, Confederation Parkway, King Street and Camilla Road. Work is scheduled to begin on Thursday May 14, 2024 at 10 p.m., until Tuesday August 6, 2024 at 10 p.m.

Construction work at this intersection is scheduled to take place from 7 a.m. – 10 p.m., seven days per week, until completion. Overnight work is required on the first day so crews can safely set up the staging for area. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained. Traffic signal timings will be adjusted to keep people moving. Pedestrian crossings will be maintained at a signalized crosswalk. Please follow the signs installed to assist with navigating around the closure.

MiWay Route 4 and 103 will be detoured because of these works. Visit www.miway.ca/updates for updates on your bus route. 2024 Pipeline Maintenance Activity

Trans-Northern Pipelines Inc. (TNPI) operates pipelines regulated by the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) to safely transport the refined petroleum products (gasoline, diesel, aviation, and heating fuel) used by Canadian businesses and consumers every day. These pipelines connect refineries in Nanticoke, Ontario, and Montreal to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with lateral pipelines to Ottawa as well as to Pearson International Airport and Pierre-Elliot Trudeau International Airport. We are committed to operating in a safe and environmentally responsible manner to protect the public, the environment, and the pipelines.

This letter is being delivered to you because our pipelines are in proximity to your home or business and we would like to advise you of some upcoming work on these pipelines.

Metrolinx is currently building an 18-kilometer light rail transit (LRT) line along the surface of Hurontario Street, between the cities of Mississauga and Brampton. The Hazel McCallion LRT Project will cross two TNPI 273.1 mm and 508 mm (NPS 10 and NPS 20) pipelines at the intersection of Hurontario Street and North Service Road/Harborn Road (refer to attached figure).

In support of Metrolinx’s Hazel McCallion LRT project, there will be some maintenance activities involving the TNPI pipelines in your area. Maintenance activities on the NPS 10 pipeline are expected to be completed in two phases:
• Phase 1 will commence on or around March 18, 2024, to access and assess the pipeline prior to extending the protective casing surrounding the pipeline, taking approximately one week to complete.
• Phase 2 will include construction work for the casing extension and is expected to commence in July 2024. This activity is anticipated to be completed within two weeks.

The maintenance work associated to the NPS 10 will be conducted on the southwest corner of Hurontario Street and Harborn Road and will include limited tree and vegetation pruning/removal near the work area. Crews will use hand tools, such as chainsaws and pruners, to remove trees and other vegetation that grows near the existing pipeline.

Maintenance activities will involve closing the curb lanes, southbound on Hurontario Street and eastbound on Harborn Road, to accommodate the equipment and ensure the safety of the maintenance workers. The lanes will be closed for the duration of the work, which is expected to take a week for the phase one work and 2 – 3 weeks for the phase two work. Please note there will be a potential increase in traffic, dust, and noise during these periods, and additional lighting on the work site may be required during these two phases of work. TNPI will have a full-time presence during these maintenance activities (7 a.m. – 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday), either with TNPI personnel and/or a TNPI representative. Both phases of the NPS 10 pipeline maintenance work are anticipated to be completed by late July 2024.

TNPI’s NPS 20 pipeline is expected to be relocated to accommodate the Hazel McCallion LRT project. Design work is ongoing and construction on this pipeline is not expected to begin until 2025. Further communications will be provided for the work associated with the NPS 20 pipeline later this year.

Temporary Driveway Closures on Hurontario from Inglewood Drive to Pinetree Way

As work progresses on the Hazel McCallion LRT project, crews will be doing road widening works between Inglewood Drive and Pinetree Way along the west side of Hurontario Street. These works are scheduled to take place from March 11 to May 6, 2024. 

To safely accommodate these works, driveways for properties within this stretch will be intermittently and partially impacted between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday for less than four hours. To accommodate motorists needing to enter and exit driveways impacted during working hours, a flag person will be present to help as needed. During this time, asphalt and concrete curbs will be removed, followed by excavation, curb preparation, concrete pour, and paving. Once the roadway has been widened, guideway construction in the area can begin later this year.

The attached notice was distributed to within a 500 meter radius of the working area. Immediately impacted property owners have been informed.

Hazel McCallion Line – Construction Liaison Committee Update

ONGOING and UPCOMING CONSTRUCTION:

The 2024 construction year is in full swing as crews remain busy along the project corridor in Mississauga South. Most of this work involves completing utility relocation and upgrades on both sides of Hurontario Street. Once the utility works wrap up in the coming months, road widening activities on both sides of Hurontario Street will begin, making room for guideway construction and track installation in the center of the roadway. Residents and businesses can expect to see:

  •  changes to the existing boulevard, driveways, sidewalks; and
  • improvements to the multi-use pathway on the east side of the street.

Here’s a snippet of ongoing and upcoming construction activities you can expect for February and March:

  • The new station at Port Credit is starting to take shape. At the platform level, work continues with forming and pouring the walls and at the street level, mechanical and electrical installation is nearing completion.
  • Alectra duct bank works continue along the boulevard on the west side of Hurontario Street between Mineola Road West and Indian Valley Trail. These works are completed in conjunction with the installation of new hydro poles and the stringing of aerial cables along the east side of Hurontario Street between Mineola and Pinewood Trail. Once complete, the plan is to remove the old hydro poles along the west side of the road and convert the electrical service to those properties from aerial to underground. In doing so, we are working with individual property owners and businesses to access their property and construct the duct banks up to their electrical metre bases. To do this work safely and efficiently, there will be temporary power outages and driveway impacts to prepare for these upgrades to the delivery of service.
  • Construction of a new Bell manhole northwest at Pinetree Way is ongoing and will continue until March 2024.
  • Connections for Rogers telecoms between Park Street and Eaglewood Boulevard are ongoing and expected to be complete by mid to late February.
  • While most of the water, storm, and sanitary infrastructure has already been upgraded and relocated in this area, there are a few minor areas remaining to install storm and sanitary pending the decommissioning and demolition of Inglewood and the handover of Eaglewood as well as at the new station at Port Credit.

  • The new bridge structure is complete at Eaglewood Boulevard and a small section of guideway and track has been constructed and installed at the future intersection. We are working with the City of Mississauga on the installation of temporary traffic signals before decommissioning the existing intersection at Inglewood Drive. Once complete, the new intersection will be handed over to the City of Mississauga which is expected in March.
  • Once Eaglewood structure is commissioned and Inglewood structure is decommissioned, a small section of flood walls and creek bed will be completed north of the new Eaglewood intersection.
  • Installation of an acoustic fence is expected to take place in February along the east side of Hurontario Street north of the plaza at Eaglewood to just south of Mineola Road East. The fence is expected to be completed by early March.
