By-election for Mississauga Mayor to take place June 10, 2024

January 31st, Mississauga City Council approved the 2024 by-election schedule to fill the Mayor’s seat. The date of the by-election for Mayor is Monday, June 10, 2024. Council officially declared the Mayor’s seat vacant on January 17, 2024 and will pass the required by-law to hold the by-election at a special Council meeting on March 6, 2024.

In accordance with legislation, when a Mayor seat becomes vacant at this point in the term of office, a by-election must be held to fill the vacancy. In Mississauga, the vacancy was created by the resignation of former Mayor Bonnie Crombie, which took effect on January 12, 2024.

“The upcoming by-election will provide an opportunity for residents to choose a candidate to take on the important role of Mayor of Mississauga,” said Diana Rusnov, Legislative Services & City Clerk. “As a City, we’re committed to a fair and accessible election that provides every eligible voter with the opportunity to cast their ballot.”

By-election schedule

  • March 6, 2024 – Candidate nomination period opens at 3 p.m. for candidates interested in running in the by-election for Mayor
  • April 26, 2024 – Candidate nomination period will close at 2 p.m.
  • May 24 and May 25, 2024 – Advance Poll days will be held at the Civic Centre
  • June 1, 2024 and June 2, 2024 – Advanced Polls open at locations across the city
  • June 10, 2024 – Voting Day

Acting Mayor

Until the vacancy is filled, Councillors rotate into the position every two months on an ascending basis by ward.

Background:

Under provincial law, when a member of Council resigns, City Council must officially declare the seat vacant at its next meeting, after which it has 60 days to either appoint a qualified elector to fill the vacancy or pass a by-law requiring a by-election.

In accordance with s.284.12 of the Municipal Act, the Head of Council (Mayor) cannot be appointed. In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, a by-election must be called to fill the vacant position.

Mississauga recognizes Black History Month

February is Black History Month – a time of education, reflection and celebration. This month, the City of Mississauga, in partnership with the Black Caucus Alliance, will continue to recognize and celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of Mississauga’s Black community through a variety of events, activities and programs.

“During the Celebrating Black Excellence event we are proud to highlight just a few of the many talented individuals and help them amplify their voices and stories in our community,” said Acting Mayor Joe Horneck. “Under the continued guidance of organizations like the Black Caucus Alliance, we’re forging a vibrant future and are committed to acting on the recommendations outlined in the Black Community Engagement Report as a City, paving the way towards a more inclusive society and helping to create positive change one step at a time.”

Throughout Black History Month, the community is invited to take part in the conversation and more importantly, to learn and develop a deeper understanding of the history of people of African descent in Canada and Mississauga. Opportunities for learning and ways to engage are featured on the Black History Month webpage, some of which include:

  • Museum tours
  • Exhibits
  • Library author talks and book clubs
  • Highlighting local Black artists and musicians
  • Events and community celebrations
  • Sports and shows

“We’re proud to partner with the City to recognize the amazing contributions of the Black community – past, present and future. Through our continued partnership, we’re taking steps towards equity by tackling anti-Black racism,” said Shelly Scott-England, Chair of the Black Caucus Alliance. “This month, we honour the Black community’s achievements, highlight our vibrant culture and history while continuing to bring awareness about ongoing injustices.”

Celebrating Black Excellence Event

The second annual Celebrating Black Excellence event will take place on Friday, February 23, 2024 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mississauga City Hall. This is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of Mississauga’s Black community. The event will include musical guests, keynote speakers and an awards ceremony. If you know someone deserving of a Black Excellence Award, please take a moment and submit a nomination.

Hazel McCallion Central Library Grand Reopening Hazel McCallion Central Library, 301 Burnhamthorpe Rd Saturday February 3, 2024

A new space to inspire literacy, creativity and lifelong learning.

Hazel McCallion Central Library is now open and all 5 floors have been transformed to meet the growing needs of our community.

Join us for the official grand opening and explore all newly renovated public space, including the Glass Pavilion, Breezeway and the Noel Ryan Auditorium.

Activities throughout the day include:

  • Official opening ceremony with Members of Council, Library Board and VIP Guests (11 am)
  • Live music featuring the Chamber Music Society of Mississauga (10 am)
  • African drumming workshop (2 pm)
  • Programs throughout the day
  • Community groups showcase
  • Informational tours

The library will be open from 9 am to 5 pm with opportunities to explore the new spaces and meet library staff members.

On Duty: photography exhibition gives unfiltered glimpse into the lives of Mississauga firefighters

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) have a responsibility to keep the City’s residents safe from hazards every day. This February, you are invited to experience the inside world of firefighting through the lens of Stephen Uhraney, an award-winning local photographer. Uhraney has been recognized by many publications and was recently named as a finalist in Canadian Firefighter’s inaugural photo contest.

‘On Duty’ includes 36 of 7,500 photos Uhraney captured of firefighters from Mississauga’s Fire Station 104. Attendees will receive a rare glimpse into the activities of Mississauga firefighters during critical moments when urgent help is required for individuals or properties in danger.

What

This photography exhibit provides an intimate look into the lives of Mississauga firefighters represented by A Shift, located at Fire Station 104 in Port Credit.

Uhraney initiated this project and looks forward to share this powerful photography experience with the public.

When

Opening night event: Thursday, February 1, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

There will be a short presentation and remarks on opening night.

Exhibition dates: February 1 – February 29, 2024

Where

St. Lawrence Starch Building in Port Credit, located at 141 Lakeshore Rd E.

Please enter the FRAM building and use the front entrance. The showroom is adjacent to the main lobby reception.

Accessibility note: There are short stairs outside and a couple of steps inside where the show will be.

The St. Lawrence building is open to the public Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; you do not need a ticket for these timings. Stephen Uhraney will be at the exhibit on the weekends, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Cost

This event is free; however, Eventbrite tickets are required for opening night.

Tickets are not required for the remainder of the month.

Coyote Information Session – Thursday February 15th

Mississauga is home to a lot of wildlife, including coyotes. Coyotes are native to North America and live in natural areas, including suburbs and cities. Mississauga residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy and live in harmony with wildlife by not interfering with their natural instincts and behaviours.

The City of Mississauga will be hosting a free information session to educate residents on coyotes and how to coexist in urban environments. The session is open to all interested Mississauga residents and will be held on Thursday, February 15. Attendance to the session is being offered either in-person or online.

The session will feature a presentation from Mississauga Animal Services staff who will share information about coyote behaviour, mating season, safety tips and how to report coyote sightings or encounters. The session will also include a Q&A period where residents can ask questions related to coyotes and get answers from the City’s Animal Services team.

Nominations are open for the second annual Black Excellence Awards

In recognition of Black History Month, starting today until February 10, nominations for the 2024 Black Excellence Awards, presented in partnership by the City of Mississauga and the Black Caucus Alliance, are now being accepted. The awards focus on the efforts and achievements of Mississauga’s Black residents and volunteers.

Mississauga residents can be nominated in one of nine categories:

Youth

Nominees must be between the ages of 15 and 24 and have volunteered for at least two consecutive years. They must act as role models for other young people and demonstrate all-around positive community involvement.

Business

Nominees must be currently engaged in business as an owner and/or entrepreneur. Ideal candidates should demonstrate a combination of the following criteria:

  • Entrepreneurial spirit and success in owning and managing a business
  • Significant contribution of new ideas, innovative practices, processes or inventions, or created employment opportunities
  • Demonstrate a commitment to fairness and equality

Community Service

Nominees should possess an outstanding record of significant community involvement and service. Candidates must also demonstrate a strong commitment to enriching the lives of others as well as building relationships and collaborating meaningfully with the individuals and communities they serve.

Education

Nominees for this award are being recognized for exemplary contributions to the well-being of students and/or community members through their active involvement in education at the school, board, in extracurricular activities or at the community level.

Health Services

Nominees for this award are being recognized for their involvement in the creation and/or promotion of methods that keep the physical health or mental wellbeing of Black communities. Ideal candidates must be employed or studying in the field of health sciences. Exhibits leadership in healthcare management administration.

Arts and Culture

Nominees for this award are being recognized for their involvement in and/or promotion of developing arts and culture within the community. Ideal candidates should demonstrate a combination of the following criteria:

  • Have demonstrated a commitment to and/or focus on community-engaged art and/or expressions of culture in Mississauga.
  • Have experience in the area of art and/or culture for a minimum of three years.
  • Have completed and/or been involved in one significant arts and culture project in the last 12 months.

Sports

Nominees for this award are being recognized for their model contribution to sports at the community or national level as an athlete or official.

Hospitality and Food Services

Nominees for this award are being recognized for the best in food, drink and/or hospitality in African-Caribbean products and/or services. The nominee will have received positive reviews and feedback from customers and peers demonstrating their commitment to customer service and satisfaction. The nominee will also have demonstrated leadership and management in hospitality operations, commitment to sustainable and ethical practices in the hospitality industry and be actively involvement in their local community.

Legacy – Lifetime Achievement

This is the highest community-based honour bestowed on an individual whose continued commitment has uplifted the lives of others.

Nominees are individuals who have made significant contributions to the Black community for 15 years or more. Candidates would have improved the quality of life for citizens or brought recognition to the City of Mississauga through their accomplishments.

Eligibility and nomination process

To be eligible, the nominee must:

  • Live and/or work in Mississauga
  • Identify as being Black
  • Stand as a role model for others
  • Inspire volunteerism and civic engagement

If you know someone deserving of an award, the steps to recognizing eligible residents include:

  1. Review the award criteria and descriptions above to determine the most appropriate category.
  2. Email BlackExcellenceAwards@mississauga.ca
  3. In your email, please include the following information:
    • Full name of the nominee, including their preferred pronouns
    • Nominee’s email and home address
    • Category for nomination (please only choose one category)
    • A brief explanation indicating why the individual should be nominated
  4. Please note that only completed nomination forms will be evaluated.

Nominees who qualify will be invited to receive their award during an evening ceremony at Mississauga City Hall on Friday, February 23 at 7 p.m.

Upcoming opportunities

Dixie Outlet Mall Policy Review

The City is moving forward with next steps to help guide the future redevelopment of the Dixie Outlet Mall site. On January 29, city staff will share draft Official Plan policies for community input. Policies around areas such as housing, parks, transportation, retail, office, commercial and community uses will be used as a framework for future development.

Here’s how to get involved:

1. Join one of our in-person community meetings at the Small Arms Inspection Building (1352 Lakeshore Rd E) on Monday, January 29 from 3-5 p.m. or 6-8 p.m.

2. If you are unable to attend the in-person meetings, the presentation will be posted on Dixie Outlet Mall Policy Review website. Comments and questions are welcome anytime.

Streetsville Heritage Conservation District

We are approaching the end of Phase 1 of the Streetsville Heritage Conservation District Study. The consulting team has completed an evaluation of the study area. It has been determined that the study area includes property which meets the legislated criteria for identifying a potential Heritage Conservation District under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act. A recommended Heritage Conservation District boundary has been identified.

Now that data has been collected and recommendations are being drafted, we are looking to the community for input. Information provided to the consultants at the upcoming community meeting will feed into a report prepared by the Consultants. This report will be brought forward to Council in late winter 2024 to determine whether or not the study should proceed to Phase 2.
