National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Service Hours at Peel Region

Early Years and Child Care Services

Child Care Subsidy will be closed on Monday, October 2, and will reopen on Tuesday, October 3.

Ontario Works in Peel 
Ontario Works will be closed on Monday, October 2, and will reopen on Tuesday, October 3.

For Peel Living maintenance requests, contact the 24-hour request line at 905-790-7335.

TransHelp
To travel on Monday, October 2 and Tuesday, October 3, you must call 905-791-1015 and book by 7 p.m. on Sunday, October 1.

On Monday, October 2 (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation):

  • Call us at 905-791-1015 if you need to cancel your trip.
  • Flexible (same day) trips will not be provided.
  • All subscription trips will be cancelled, with the exception of dialysis trips.
  • TransHelp will operate from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.
  • The TransHelp office will be closed and unable to process applications, payments, or feedback.

We offer bookings up to 7 days in advance. Consider booking your next trip early to ensure your holiday travel. Email transhelp@peelregion.ca or call 905-791-1015 with any questions.

Waste collection Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon
There will be no change to your waste collection schedule due to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

All Community Recycling Centres are closed on Saturday, September 30 and will reopen on Sunday October 1, with the exception of Caledon CRC (reopening on Monday, October 2) and Bolton CRC (reopening on Tuesday, October 3).

2023 Fall Leaf Pickup Program

In the fall, the City of Mississauga provides a vacuum leaf pickup service on streets that are more than 35 years old and have many large mature trees.

Where leaves are picked up

You can refer to the leaf pickup route map and schedule to find out if your street is part of the leaf pickup program.

If your address is listed for the leaf pickup service, you’ll get a notice in the mail letting you know when leaves will be picked up in your area.

Rain or early snowfall can impact the collection schedule. To find out if your street is affected, you can call 311 (905-615-4311 outside City limits).

Preparing for leaf pickup

If your area is listed for leaf pickup:

  • Rake your leaves into a neat pile on the boulevard’s edge or into your ditch a day or two before the start of your collection week – Do not rake them onto the stret
  • Don’t mix other items such as wood, bricks or brush as they can damage equipment and injure workers
  • Keep the road and curbside storm drains clear of raked leaves
  • Do not place garbage bags or bins on top of loose leaf piles
  • Remove parked cars and sports equipment from the road

If you missed leaf pickup

If you missed the City’s leaf pickup or more leaves fall after your scheduled leaf pickup:

The Region of Peel will pick up leaves and yard waste that you have collected and placed in bins or paper bags on your regular waste collection day until December 8.

You can compost your leaves or spread them around the base of your trees to fertilize the soil by protecting it against extreme temperatures.

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services hosting free BBQ and open house ahead of Fire Prevention Week

On Friday, October 6, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) invites everyone to join them for a free barbeque and open house at the Garry W. Morden Centre as they kick off Fire Prevention Week. The open house will have activities that the whole family can enjoy and participate in.

The focus of the open house is aimed at educating attendees about cooking safety, fire prevention and how to stay safe in the event of a fire. According to MFES, unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires and injuries in the home. In the past four years alone, there have been 194 cooking-related fire incidents in Mississauga.

Fire Prevention Week is from October 8 to 14, 2023, and focuses on teaching children, adults, and teachers about how to stay safe in case of a fire.

This is a free event with many educational and fun activities planned for families, such as:

  • A live demonstration of how to safely respond to a grease fire, performed by trained staff
  • Free barbeque
  • Touch a truck – explore the inside of a variety of vehicles, including fire trucks, military vehicle, mobile library, snow plow and many more!
  • Booths with demonstrations and displays – learn more about City services and programs
  • Car seat clinic
  • Children’s activities and free giveaways

After the water interruption:

When we turn the water back on, air in the pipes may make the water cloudy and your plumbing may vibrate or make noise.  We recommend removing the air by slowly turning on your taps from the lowest to the highest faucet in the building (that is, starting in the basement/first floor and finishing on the top floor). Flush the toilets as well. You will likely need to run the water for 10 to 30 seconds.  Run the water until it is clear, and any vibration or noise has stopped.

Important note:  After the water is turned back on, we recommend checking your water meter (usually located in the basement).  If it is leaking, call Water Meter Installations Dispatch at:
